Music To Listen To While Writing

Do you ever find yourself writing something, and you just need something in the background?

Maybe it's too quiet and you get distracted. Maybe you're at a coffee shop and you can't concentrate. Or maybe you're writing something tough and just need a breather.

Whatever the reason, I've found that music can be helpful for writing. Music is relaxing and inspiring. Right now, I'm listening to Chopin's Nocturne, performed by Brooklyn Classical. I'll link to it in the suggestions below.

So what's some good music to listen to while writing? Today, I'll show you some of my favorites! Let's go!

CLASSICAL PIANO MUSIC

I'm a pianist myself, so I really like listening to piano music, and I can easily search it on YouTube.

I'll go ahead and list some classical piano music here for you to check out and listen to while you write. I especially love the Nocturne and Canon in D.
As a Christian myself, I love listening to instrumental music. Sometimes I'll sing to it, but it can also be helpful for writing.

Here are three of my favorites:

'TIS THE SEASON

I just had to add this section! I know it isn't Christmas yet, but maybe you're like me and you like to listen to Christmas music all year round. (I'm not the only one who does, right?)

These three instrumental songs by The Piano Guys are so beautiful and inspiring!

INSTRUMENTAL STUDYING MUSIC

Here is a list of relaxing instrumental music I found for writing, reading, and studying! (Might help you with school too.) These are longer videos that will help you concentrate on your writing. This is probably my favorite section.

QUICK TIPS FOR YOUTUBE

Before we end, I wanted to share these quick tips if you plan to use YouTube for your songs.

First of all, make a specific writing playlist! This will help keep you organized.

So you don't get distracted, use a long version of the song, or put the song on repeat. Just right click the video screen and click "loop," and it will play on repeat for as long as you want.

Finally, pull YouTube up on a different window so you don't have the temptation to scroll through your feed.

I hope these tips and suggestions are helpful to you! Keep this in mind: If you are working on a tough project, you might find music more distracting than helpful.

Or maybe you'll find you don't work well with music. That's totally fine! Do whatever works best for you.

It'll be nice to have this list handy if you're at a loud coffee shop and just need to put the earbuds in with quiet music to help block out the noise.

Do you like writing with music? What type of music do you like for writing?

  1. Great tips Julia! I love listening to music while I write. I listen to music from a youtube channel called DappyTKeys, which has a bunch of 3+ hour long instrumental hymns and worship songs. It really helps me focus and get in the mood for writing!

  2. I make a Playlist for every book I write. I mostly do historical fiction, so I'll compile my favorite songs of the era and songs that apply to the situations in the book, organize them and hit play. And if I'm writing a scene and need a certain mood, I'll skip to the song that gives it to me.

For my modern Military stories, I use cadences... a lot. Branch specific ones. It helps to hear then sergeants singing it out while writing about it (I'm very selective, as I don't want any with swear words). One favorite was We are the Sons or UDT!

Another favorite is Yuruma. He's an excellent pianist.

    1. That is such a cool idea, Ryana Lynn! Thank you for sharing! I'll have to look into that for my books too.
I feel like I've heard of Yuruma too, but I can't remember. I'll check him out! :)

  3. It is so neat to see what kind of music others listen to while they write! This is something that I began doing recently when I write anything. It truly does help with concentration and blocks out distractions! Typically, I will listen to classical music, lofi, bossa nova jazz, hymn instrumentals or kpop piano instrumentals. It is nice to have something in the background. :)
